HWMC began to provide medical services to the overseas patients in November 1989. The team worked hard to improve its professional capacities and service level with the great support of leaders and medical officers from Kettering Medical Center, USA, Hong Kong Adventist Hospital, Hawaii Medical Center and consulates general of America, Britain and Canada. A comprehensive operational system, including medical service process, nursing care, financial management and supportive team, had gradually taken shape.
On November 7th 1990, Dr. HU Ximing, Vice-Minister of Health and Madam CHEN Zhili, Deputy Secretary of Shanghai Municipality, attended the Grand Opening Ceremony of Huashan Worldwide Medical Center (HWMC) together with consuls general from various countries as well as leaders from Shanghai Medical University, Huashan Hospital and co-investor Mr. Yang Keh-Ping, a Hong Kong entrepreneur．HWMC possess 22 standard medical equipped rooms accommodated with 40 beds, plus 2 rooms for outpatient and emergency services．The center has elegant and comfortable environment with efficient patient services．It was the very first medical center in Shanghai to provide premium medical service while respecting cultural differences.
In April 1994, Dr. Helmut Arndt, German Consul General Shanghai gave the Bronze Award on behalf of consulates general of Australia, Canada, Germany, Great Britain, India, Japan, New Zealand and the United States of America to HUASHAN WORLDWIDE MEDICAL CENTER as a high appraisal of the center’s quality medical service provided to their staff and citizens in Shanghai. Madam Zhou Jianping, Deputy Director-General of Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau, Prof. Yao Tai, President of Shanghai Medical University, as well as the diplomats from 8 Consulates General witnessed this historical moment. As the milestone of the medical service in China, it was extensively reported firsthand by the leading media and press in Shanghai.
The Grand Opening Ceremony of New Outpatient Clinic
Along with China’s accession to WTO and the upcoming of world Expo 2010, the influx of foreigners to Shanghai will be tremendous. The limited outpatient capacity was not sufficient to satisfy the increasing demands of patient in terms of volume and service excellence．HWMC managed to open the new outpatient clinic with nice indoor decoration and full deployment within three months with the great support of Prof. XU Jianguang, President of Huashan Hospital, as well as the concerted efforts of all staffs．The new clinic facility was put into use in early 2007．
The grand opening ceremony of the new outpatient facility was launched as one of the series centenary celebration activities of Huashan Hospital．The participants were leaders from Committee for Liaison with Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and Overseas Chinese, CPPCC in Shanghai, Shanghai Foreign Affairs Office, Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau, Fudan University, consuls general of America, Italy and Argentina as well as representatives from major hospitals, international corporations, insurance companies, and friends from all walks of life．At the ceremony, Prof．XU Jianguang signed the cooperative agreement with Mondial Assistance China and Ping An Health Insurance Co. China Ltd.
The new outpatient clinic is located on the 8th floor of Huashan Ambulatory Building, covering around 850 square meters．It is bright and spacious, where one-stop service including registration, consultation, test, pharmacy and cashier is provided．Equipped with digital X-ray, diagnostic ultrasound equipment and hospital information system, a full array of healthcare services, including general practice, specialty consultation, health check-up and vaccination can be provided here. The outpatient clinic is highly recognized for its state-of-the-art facility, neat and comfortable environment and medical service excellence.
Designated as the Official Medical Provider by Italian Consulate General Shanghai
With increasing cultural and economic exchange between China and Italy, more and more Italians come to China. On Oct.25th 2007, Mr. Massimo Roscigno, Consul General of Italy in Shanghai honored Bronze Medal to HWMC, their official medical provider, to show their appreciation for the center's outstanding medical service on behalf of Italian community in Shanghai. The ceremony for cooperation was also initiated, whilst three doctors were certified as the preferred doctors to the consulate. Prof. Xu Jianguang. Director General of Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau and President of Huashan Hospital, Prof. Ding Qiang, Executive Vice President of Huashan Hospital attended the ceremony.
Consequentially, Consulate General of Finland, Republic of South Africa, Singapore and others were also attracted by the quality services in HWMC, and inquired for the provision of medical services to their citizens in China.
Hosting Delegates from Consular Spouses Shanghai
On Jan. 30th 2008, Mandisa Khumalo, President of Consular Spouses Shanghai(CSS), Madam South African Consul General, along with 22 CSS members paid a visit to Huashan Hospital, and received a warm welcome by Prof. XU Jianguang, Director General of Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau and President of Huashan Hospital, Prof. Feng Xiaoyuan, Dean of Fudan University Shanghai Medical College, Prof．DING Qiang, Executive Vice-President of Huashan Hospital and staff from HWMC. Prof. Xu introduced the history and development of Huashan Hospital to CSS and expressed his appreciation for their continuous support to HWMC. Prof. GU Jingwen, Director of HWMC, showed CSS the recent progress & special feature of HWMC, and toured them around the historical building of Red Cross Society of China, HWMC outpatient clinic etc. This event enhanced CSS’s knowledge to Huashan Hospital and received its positive response. The visiting members highly praised the hospital's beautiful environment and service excellence.
Oct. 2009 The 20th Annivesary Celerabtion Party
On October 16th, 2009, more than 250 participants from every walks of lives, including consuls general and consuls from The United States, Germany, France, Italy, Republic of Ireland, Australia, Japan, Singapore, India, The Philippines, Russia, Argentina, Republic of South African in Shanghai, delegations from Harvard medical school and Kettering Health Network, USA and Japanese hospital attended the grand celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Huashan Worldwide Medical Centre, witnessing the development of the Centre for the past two decades. From 1989 to 2009, with the hard work and efforts of several generations of Huashaners, HWMC had accumulated valuable experiences in medical diagnosis and treatment, emergency response, nursing care and medical escort. It has become the leading medical facility for overseas patients in Shanghai and Yangzi Delta region, enjoying a good reputation in the field.
During Shanghai World Expo in 2010, HWMC was designated as the medical provider for “international” community. With treatment priority lane and special ward arranged, between March and November, 136 staff had enjoyed our service, and 11 were admitted into the center. On 12th September the director of HWMC and her team provided free medical consultation in Expo Park for the staff of Spanish, Norwegian, Swedish, Russian and Canadian Pavilions. A total of 69 cases were consulted during this activity. Letter of thanks were received from each pavilion.
Medical Backup for Sports Events in Shanghai
As the principal medical backup for sport events in Shanghai, HWMC serves as the Appointed Ward for 2007 World Summer Special Olympics, 2008 Olympic Games，2011 World Swimming Championship and 2014 International Equestrian Master. It has also been appointed as medical backup for F1, V8 racing and NBA All-Star Game.
The Inauguration Ceremony of the Society of International Medicine, Shanghai Medical Association
On 22th October 2010, a grand Inauguration Ceremony was held for the Society of International Medicine, Shanghai Medical Association, followed by the 3rd International Forum of the Premium Healthcare in Shanghai. The attendees included the officials of Shanghai Health Bureau, Shanghai Medical Association, and Fudan University, the consulates general in Shanghai and their medical officials, the leaders from various hospitals in Shanghai and relevant representatives. More than 200 participants gathered under the same roof to witness and celebrate this special occasion. As the first society in China that involves in international medicine, it advocates and encourages participants to enhance communication and collaboration, in order to create a brighter future for premium healthcare in China. As the chairman of the first committee of the Society of International Medicine, Prof. GU Jingwen introduced the preparation for the Society.
The academic week for medical service excellence was held during Oct. 15th-23rd, 2010. Harvard Medical School Professor and chief nurse from Kitano Hospital, Kyoto University held the medical and nursing ward-round and consultation guidance. Physicians from Ireland and Spain introduced their medical system and medical education in their countries.
Shanghai Medical Tourism Development Symposium
On Nov. 18th,2010, the Shanghai medical tourism development symposium was held by the Society of International Medicine, Shanghai Medical Association，Huashan Worldwide Medical Centre, and Shanghai medical tourism development and promoting platform in the grand garden hall of Huashan Hospital. More than 40 professions and representatives attended the symposium. Jonathan Edelheit, chairman of the global medical tourism association, was invited to the symposium as a guest speaker. Professor GU Jingwen, the chairman of SIM and Mr. Chen Ping, deputy director of the international promotion department, Shanghai Municipal Tourism Administration also gave their speeches at the seminar. Thereafter, HWMC had organized various symposiums related to the development of medical tourism and had a reception for Mr. Josef Woodman, the Author of “Patients Beyond Borders”.
Designated as the official Medical Provider by The Republic of South Africa Consulate General Shanghai
On May 31th 2011，Huashan Worldwide Medical Center is appointed as the health care provider by the consulate general of The Republic of South Africa in Shanghai. President DING Qiang, CPC secretary GU Xiaoping of Huashan Hospital and the consul general couple of South Africa attended the awarding ceremony.
So far HWMC has been appointed by 10 consulates general in Shanghai as their medical healthcare provider, representing HWMC’s new step forward to becoming a medical facility of international standard.
In Oct. 2011, the International Forum – Premium Healthcare was approved and further accredited in National Continue Medical Education Training Program. Since then, HWMC consecutively held three National Continue Education Training Programs. The attendees were from across the nation. They gained knowledge and insight through the seminars, discussions and observation. The programs has driven and promoted regional premium healthcare development.
In Sept. 2012, HWMC held a round table meeting named “Incorporate Western Experience to Train the General Practitioners in Shanghai”. Mr. Zhang Kan, Chief of Education Department from Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau and Experts of General Practitioner from Taiwan, Singapore, US, UK and Canada were invited; together with Prof. Gu Jingwen, the chairperson of the meeting and Director of HWMC, gave inspiring speeches and generated a lively discussion regarding the regional and overseas setting and training program in General Practice. The round table meeting not only had made a contribution for local policy making but also enhancing the development of internationalize GP service; strengthen the local fundamental health service and push forward tertiary medical network in Shanghai. Over the years, HWMC has made tremendous effort in exploring, integrating and training General Practitioners in premium healthcare. In Feb. 2013, HWMC official received the approval from Shanghai Municipal Commission of Health and Family Planning to be the first training base for General Practice Program in premium healthcare in Shanghai.
